The Most Important Things I've Learned About Life So Far, Are…
by Liz Schillinger • Port Jefferson Station

…to never take anything for granted. Every good thing that happens to you, whether you've earned it or not, is a gift. Treat is as such.

…to face adversity with good humor. Know that each person has their heartaches, whether or not you are aware of them. Some may be less than yours and some may be greater, and we are all just doing the best we can. Know that just as the good times pass, so do the bad. Look forward to that day and keep faith that it will come.

…to be kind to others whether or not you believe they deserve it. That is not for you to judge and even if you are right, know that someday it will come back to you. And maybe, if you are fortunate, it will have even made a difference in that person's life.

…to look for the best in others and point it out to them. Often people will try to live up to the good we see in them.

…to realize that at some point in your life, it is likely you will love someone who won't love you back. This does not mean that you are unlovable. Do what you can to heal, but respect the other's wishes. Remember that there is no reward in forcing someone to be with you and it only serves to make them miserable and uncomfortable. And you would not want to do that to someone you love. Accept it. It isn't always about what we want; other people's feelings matter too.

…to realize that even if you fill your every day with beautiful deeds, there will be some who'll choose to twist them around into ugliness. Don't get caught up in their illusions. Know your own self and your own truths, and allow that to be enough. Then wish them love and peace, and be on your way, as it is love and peace that these people need most of all.

…to take time out to stomp in a puddle, build a sand castle, jump into a pile of leaves or make a snowman. Each season brings a new adventure - don't miss out on it.

…to accept change. It helps us grow, even when it hurts.

…to watch a spider spin a web. Not only is it a magical sight, it is probably the closest you will ever come to seeing that we all have to work hard for what we need.

…to respect the world around you and all the creatures in it. Everything here has a purpose. And even if you fail to know or understand that purpose, realize that doesn't make its presence any less valid.

…to remember the Golden Rule. So few do, and it's time it made a comeback.
