Muscle Resistance Testing

by Dr. Steven Silverman • Roslyn Heights & Hauppauge

Muscle resistance testing was developed by Dr. George Goodheart in the 1960’s and evolved into a highly researched technique called Applied Kinesiology. Dr. Goodheart is a genius and a gifted man whose work has been helpful to countless thousands of patients.

Muscle resistance testing allows a practitioner to get instant feedback from the body. It can be used for various applications, such as testing for organ reflex points, which can indicate low energetic functioning of a particular organ. Often, muscle testing is used to evaluate the proper functioning of muscles and to evaluate the musculo-skeletal system, which supports the body.

Muscles attach to tendons, which attach to bones, so any type of neck or back condition– bursitis, tendonitis, sprain, strain or chronic conditions such as fibromyalgia and myositis– can be evaluated.

After applying a treatment protocol, the muscles can be retested. They will frequently show an immediate change in muscle strength if the treatment was effective. Whether the treatment is chiropractic, acupuncture, homeopathy, herbology, deep tissue therapy, biofeedback, exercise or even medication, muscle resistance testing allows for pre and post evaluation of weaknesses and gives instant feedback. This helps in the effective management of treatment.

A particularly huge benefit of muscle resistance testing is the ability to check for food sensitivities. Food sensitivities are negative energetic responses the body has to certain foods. They are different from allergies. Allergy testing implies a particular immune response, and it usually does not pick up food sensitivities.

Many conditions have a diet component, so food is one of the issues that must be dealt with. From my observations in many years of practice, it is rare to see a patient whose diet is not having an impact on their health problems. For example, many people drink coffee. Coffee, due to the various toxic acids that it contains, weakens the liver and kidneys. When the liver is weakened, it weakens the rhomboid muscle and/or pectoralis muscle. A weak rhomboid will create trapezius pain and mid-back pain, particularly between the shoulder blades. A weak pectoralis muscle will create shoulder pain and can easily lead to bursitis. Weak kidneys will create lower back pain and possibly hip pain due to the connection of the kidney to the psoas muscle.

Regardless of the technique you use for healing, being aware of this connection and having the ability to test for it will make a huge difference in the outcome of your treatment. Not knowing or seeing this connection can lead to poor outcome in the treatment of persistent conditions.

There are many other dietary factors that affect our health and the outcome of any treatment we may give or receive. Some people are gluten intolerant. Gluten is found in practically all grains and can create fatigue, brain fog, muscle pain and chronic intestinal distress. If you have this condition, and are taking all sorts of nutrients, detox formulas, anti-oxidants, herbs, etc., you will not get well despite your efforts. Muscle testing will give you this knowledge and allow your treatment provider to help you effectively. There are many other items in the diet that people typically react to, which can be tested for. You can even know exactly what part of the body a food has a negative impact on– it is not unusual to see foods affect the brain, spine, muscles and or joints, or the digestive system.

Metal toxicity is common and likely to be found in many people. However, it can be easily and rapidly recognized through muscle testing. In addition, appropriate remedies can be decided through muscle testing. Mercury toxicity is often found in people with skin rashes, irritations or itchy skin. Mercury can cause joint pain and severe fatigue. Testing is simple and quick and the right remedy can change symptoms in a matter of days.

Many patients are reactive to the very vitamins, minerals and supplements that they may need. The idea that if a nutrient doesn’t help, it won’t hurt is incorrect! People do react to supplements, and sometimes the reaction creates new symptoms or exacerbates others. The more sensitive the person, the more likely it is that they will need nutrients, but it is also more likely that they will be sensitive to supplements. You can test and find out for sure. I am a state certified nutritionist with 23 years of experience treating difficult and chronic conditions and I would rather not practice nutrition if I couldn’t use muscle testing!

Dr. Silverman is offering a seminar on resistance muscle testing for licensed health professionals on May 10th in Roslyn Heights. He is a chiropractor, kinesiologist and state certified nutritionist. He teaches holistic health and nutrition and has appeared on TV and radio. For more information about the seminar, or to contact him, call (631) 724-6780 or (516) 484-0776.
