This is Our Story

In 1952, when I was still in college, I had the opportunity to meet with President Dwight Eisenhower, who was a friend of my father. I asked the President, “What is the potential of our new power and technology that is good?” To my dismay, he had no answer. He just replied, “I do not know. I have no idea.”

In that moment I thought to myself that if the President of the United States, the most powerful man in the world, had no idea, then somebody better find out. And for many years I was one of the people trying to do so.

I co-founded the Committee for the Future in Washington, D.C., and I was also instrumental in founding the World Future Society. In my advocacy for a positive future, I met Buckminster Fuller, Abraham Maslow, and many other powerful leaders.

One day, Dr. Jonas Salk called me up out of the blue and invited me to lunch! Jonas had read an article I had written and was moved to meet with me. He explained that he felt I was among several visionaries of the post–World War II generation who were filled with a mysterious sense of the future and a desire to give their best for the good of all. Jonas was emphatic that people like me were needed for humankind to evolve to its next level. This recognition from Jonas started me on my path as an evolutionary woman, learning that we are all part of the greater process of creation.

One afternoon in 1966, while I took my usual walk, a great question suddenly arose in my mind. I had been reading Reinhold Niebuhr on the theme of community, and he had been quoting the biblical statement in Corinthians that all of us are members of one body. With that quote in mind, and filled with so many ideas that were not fully assimilated, I stopped and raised my face upward to the universe and demanded, “I want to know our story. What on Earth is comparable to the story of the birth of Christ? What story, if we knew it, would make the difference for our generation the way the Gospels have for 2,000 years?”

My mind’s eye immediately went into outer space, as if I were an astronaut looking down on planet Earth. I saw the Earth struggling to coordinate. I felt the Earth running out of energy and resources. I felt the shared pain that existed throughout the entire planet, in both animals and humans as well as in plants and even the rocks and soil. I felt myself as one with all of life, and I felt the unity of all life, and of Earth as a single body of which we are all but a part.

Suddenly, as if in a movie, the scene of present-day Earth suffering shifted to a future time. I realized that the pain was a signal that woke us up! I felt empathy pouring forth throughout the entire planet. I felt people helping each other, healing each other. I saw breakthroughs in health, education, energy, business, environment, and media. I saw collaboration among all peoples and all fields. I saw the reality that when human beings connected with their genius and their ability to innovate, the Earth had sufficient resources to feed, house, educate, and sustain all life on her. I felt that when our innovations all connect, we really are one planetary body.

In that moment, it was as though all humanity breathed one coordinated breath together. I felt mystic light arising from all people on Earth, and with that shared breath, a wonderful tone was heard – a vibration that linked us all in resonance, in a moment of global heart-coherence. This breath and tone generated a vibration of joy that resonated in the hearts of tens of millions of human beings. Collectively, we experienced lights from the universe coming toward us . . . almost ready for “contact.” But we were still too young as a species. It was as if we had just, as a planetary collective, opened our eyes for the first time and experienced our first “planetary smile.”

Then I heard these words: ‘”Our story is the birth of a universal humanity. What all the great avatars came to Earth to reveal is true. We are one body. We are being born. We are whole, we are good, and we are universal. Go tell the story of the birth of a universal humanity, Barbara!”
