Living From the Heart

The 2nd Annual Long Island Small Farm Summit
by Bhvani Jaroff • Long Island, NY

Farm SummitHow much do you know about your food system? Come learn more about farm-to-school programs, community gardens, food justice and policy, backyard chickens, biodynamic farming, beekeeping and more at the 2012 Long Island Small Farm Summit at Hofstra University.

Get inspired from this year’s line-up of keynote speakers including, Will Allen, the founding CEO of Growing Power and Chef Ann Copper, the Renegade Lunch Lady!  Hear more about how Will Allen, the son of a sharecropper, former professional basketball player, ex-corporate sales leader became recognized as one of the most powerful, preeminent thinkers of our time on agriculture and food policy. He is the founding CEO of Growing Power, a Milwaukee, Wisconsin-based national non-profit organization and land trust that supports people from diverse backgrounds, and the environments in which they live, by helping to provide equal access to healthy, high-quality, safe and affordable food.

Be sure to also check out Chef Ann Cooper, also known as the Renegade Lunch Lady, a celebrated author, chef, educator, and enduring advocate for better food for all children. In our nation where children are born with shorter estimated life expectancies than their parents because of diet-related illness, Ann is a relentless voice of reform by focusing on the links between food, family, farming and children's health and wellness. Ann is at the forefront of the movement to transform the National School Lunch Program into one that places greater emphasis on health and nutrition.

Join folks from all walks of life, including educators, farmers, parents, restaurant owners and chefs, as well as community leaders, students, not-for-profits, and concerned citizens who will gather at Hofstra University on April 14th to attend this one-day conference. The Summit also includes interesting exhibits and vendors, a Family Concert with Tom Chapin and a community of folks interested in growing, eating and supporting a vibrant local agricultural community. With over 1,000 expected attendees, this year’s Small Farm Summit is sure to not disappoint. The Summit is an on-going effort to cultivate active support of sustainable local agriculture that is accessible to all.
